Activate North Carolina

The program for the site called for Eight  1,800 Sq. Ft. family residential units, Eight 1,200 Sq. Ft. live-work residential units, a minimum of 4,000 Sq. Ft. of commercial space, parking for residents, bicycle parking and a minimum of 25% of the site as open, public space. The site itself is a collection of 4 different properties in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Our Strategy is to create density by stacking the Live-Work Units on top of the Commercial Block and placing the Family Units as individual houses with a private outdoor space one next to the other row-house style. This allows for large areas of the site to be used as open space by both the residents as well as the community. Here the residents will enjoy not only those open spaces but will have their own individual outdoors in the form of terraces, garden plots and private courtyards.  A North / South exposure allows for natural ventilation and light as well as two different views of the urban fabric, the commercial strip along South Mint Street to the South and the greener residential landscape to the North.
